THE BUICK GRAND NATIONAL – ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES
In my mind the 1984-1987 Buick Regal Grand Nationals were some of the best cars GM ever produced. It’s advanced technology and performance for the era and the classic, sinister good looks makes it a much sought after car even some 25 years later. In 1984 the turbocharged 3.8 L V-6 became standard and was refined with sequential fuel injection, distributor-less computer controlled ignition. The 1986 & 87 models were further enhanced with an inter-cooler for the turbocharger. During this period the Grand National was probably the fastest American production car.
All Grand Nationals from this period were painted black and were nicknamed Darth Vader. The Grand Nationals have a cult like following. It’s not unusual for a die-hard Grand National guy to coax well over 1,000 hp from one of these 3.8 liter turbo-charged V6 engines and run an 8 seconds quarter-mile.
