This was a smallish local show that had as much or more interesting stuff than some of the biggest events I’ve been to. Don’t let the small local show mislead you there was a lot of really good stuff. A very nice selection of Mustangs, a Studebaker Avanti, an AMC Javelin, a Cobra kit car with an Alan Kulwicki 550HP NASCAR engine, a Kim Kardashian look alike, and lots of other super cute AmericanGirls.

The 2009 show was the 7th annual that the cosponsoring West Knox Lions Club and the Farragut Lion Club (Knoxville, Tn.) have put on. 100% of the proceeds go to the vision assistance projects of the two clubs

As interesting as Walt’s Mustang is I think Walter’s war story is much more interesting and important than his car so let’s cover that first. Walter is a Vietnam Vet. I think Vietnam Vets talk with other Vietnam Vets about their time and duties in Vietnam quite candidly and proudly and can be therapeutic. To a civilian, like me, the Vietnam Vets become cautious and vague about their Vietnam experience because they know civilians just can’t understand the hell they went through and the hell they sometimes had to inflict to survive and do their duty

I asked Walter about his Vietnam experience and this is what he told me. ‘’I get that question a lot because of my backseat and (license) tag. Some folks ask how long were you there and I always say a year and three days you would have to had been there to understand the meaning of the answer (three days longer than I wanted to be there). The next question asked is what did you do? I could go on for day about what I did but the bottom line is I was part of unit that rained down death and destruction to our enemy. We were very precise and deliberate and received an Outstanding Unit Metal and three Presidential Citations metals for our work. It is hard for me to bring up this subject because it is hard on my heart and head to recall the things we did and saw. On the other side I helped save the lives of some of my brothers and that gives me some peace.’’

Thanks goodness America has warriors like Walter!

I love this picture. The simplicity and innocence of Kimberly’s pose next to the tricked out Mustang is a synergistic thing of beauty. The only thing that might have made it better is if Kimberly’s identical twin sister Kayla would have been along to be in the picture. Kimberly will be a sophomore at Farragut High School. She was at the show with her Dad. Back in her Dad’s garage is a 1959 Corvette, 1968 Corvette, and a 1968 Z28 Camaro. I don’t see the girls getting any of those cars when they turn sixteen

The very modern design and high output engine 289 ci/240hp (for the era) seemed to insure this car would be success. However fit and finish problems with the fiber glass body caused long production delays that ultimately led to the demise of the Avanti after only two short years of production. Ed’s Avanti is one of the best that remains, period. It is original as it came off of the production line except for restored paint and chrome. Ed’s Avanti has one several national awards.

In 1992 Kent built this stunning Cobra as a show and go shop car. As stunning as the Cobra is the most interesting thing about the car is the engine. The engine is a Ford 358 c.i. , 550 hp NASCAR engine. It was built in 1992 by the same shop that supplied engines to Alan Kulwicki’s NASCAR team that won the Winston Cup championship that year. The Dinnhaupts drive the Cobra on the street all the time and the only problem they have is finding the high octane racing fuel the engine requires. For any of you local Knoxville Tn. folks you can get racing fuel at the Pilot station at the intersection of Northshore and Pellissippi Pkwy

Six years later it now has 42,000 mile so it’s no trailer queen. In those six years Larry has completely redone the suspension, added a 2½’’ exhaust system, a Cobra intake, a MSD distributor and ignition box and finally a Mac cold air kit. Cold air kit or not this is one cool car. Larry, his wife and the Mustang live in Powell, Tn.

Just a little history lesson first. AMC stands for American Motor Company and was formed in 1954 when Hudson and Nash , both American automobile makers merged. It’s not this simple but before AMCs demise in the 1980’s AMC had developed the Jeep brand and because Chrysler had an ownership position in AMC and the Jeep brand was able to survive. Now for the Javelin: the Javelin was AMC’s answer to the Camaro and Mustang. It was produced from 1968-1974 but was not really ever very popular probably because AMC was not known as a performance car company and because AMC was a much smaller company than GM and Ford and did not have a large enough dealer distributorship. The Javelin was successfully raced in the old Trans Am series in the early 1970’s by driver Mark Donahue and team owner Roger Penske.

The owner of this Javelin is Chris Duffy from Port Charlotte Fl. Chris is an electrician by trade and was in Knoxville following some construction work in the east Tennessee area. Amazingly enough the 1972 Javelin only has 12,000 miles. Chris told me as an approximation the car is an 80% numbers matching car

Hey guys thanks for reading my stuff and looking at my pictures!!! Tom
